Please plan ahead for changes on new Manukau motorway

The NZ Transport Agency is asking motorists to prepare for big changes in Manukau when the westbound lanes of the new SH20-1 Manukau Extension motorway open on Sunday 26 September.

The new motorway connects the Southwestern (SH20) and Southern Motorways (SH1) at Manukau City.

Motorists will be able to travel onto the new SH20 westbound lanes from SH1, Redoubt Road and Lambie Drive from Sunday.

However for those heading to the motorway from Manurewa and Clendon, there will be no access to the motorway from Roscommon Road.

Severe delays are expected - so please avoid the area. Motorists are being advised to use the signposted detour via Wiri Station Road to the new Lambie Drive interchange or to find other alternative routes, such as using a combination of SH1 and the new westbound lanes of the SH20.

The NZTA is recommending that people plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys, and it is advised that businesses with staff who use the affected roads share this information with them in order that they and their staff can plan ahead.

In addition to the detour along Wiri Station Road, please note that after the opening of the SH20 Manukau Extension airport bound motorists on the westbound lanes of the new motorway are advised to use George Bolt Drive (SH20A) to get to the airport, a map showing this detour is also attached.

These detours will be in place while the project team construct the Roscommon – Puhinui Connecting Road, which is due for completion in December. This will involve the realignment of a stream and the demolition of the old Roscommon Road. Once completed, this connecting road will provide a link between the new motorway and Puhinui Road and the airport.
