  • Currently 13 million people pass through Auckland Airport every year – that’s three times the population of New Zealand. Of the 13 million, 7.4 million are international travellers and 5.6 million are domestic.

  • The international terminal is currently designed to handle 2,000 travellers departing and arriving every hour. Flight schedules are planned around these volumes.


  • The investment in the expansion of the international terminal is approximately $150 million. This includes the new arrivals area and the new pier, which opened in October 2008.


  • Auckland Airport is unique for having a marae. The marae is a symbol of tribal identity and is a meeting place described as a place of belonging. The airport marae is a result of the special relationship between Auckland Airport and Tainui, the local tangata whenua.  


  • Over 70% of visitors enter or leave New Zealand via Auckland Airport and the airport is served by 22 international airlines.


  • Auckland Airport is Australasia’s second busiest international airport and is preparing for a forecast 24 million passengers a year by 2025. This growth reflects New Zealand’s growing popularity as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.


  • Auckland Airport is home to a new arrivals DFS duty-free shop, which at 1,600sqm is the biggest in the Asia-Pacific and the second largest in the world.


  • Greening the Airport is an Auckland Airport strategy that is guided by the principles of the three Rs (to reduce, reuse and recycle). Greening the Airport focuses on resource efficiency, waste minimisation and energy conservation.


  • Auckland Airport is one of the first group of airports in the world to be A380-capable. The first scheduled A380 flight into New Zealand landed at Auckland on 2 February 2009, operated by Emirates.


  • Auckland Airport is the site where on 16 October 1936 pioneering aviator Jean Batten landed at the end of the first epic flight from England to New Zealand. Batten was welcomed by a huge crowd who had flocked to the grass air strip at Mangere to greet her.


  • Construction of a new runway to the north of the existing runway is underway and  will be completed in stages to meet demand. The masterplan is for the northern runway to be fully complete by 2025. Once constructed to its full permitted length of 2,150 metres, the dual runway system will be handling some 225,000 aircraft movements per annum, enabling tourism growth into New Zealand.

  • Auckland Airport generates $19 billion dollars a year for the national economy, creating over 280,000 jobs, and helping grow New Zealand trade and tourism. Almost 19,000 people work at Auckland Airport.
