Travel heroes

Lift celebrates the ingenious ways people are choosing to get to work differently, as well as rewarding those who participate and promote sustainable travel to work.

Here are a selection:

Go By Bike Day

Wednesday 18th February 2009 and the international terminal was full of lycra.

Go by bike day brings out the lycra

Well done to all those who got to work differently on the day - see you next year!

MAF and Customs

Lift is so successful in both MAF and Customs that when new employees are inducted they are given information on the programme. If people are carpooling then that is taken into consideration when their shift rosters are worked out - Well Done MAF and Customs!!

Regency Duty FreeTravel heros.

Lift is also gaining a reputation outside the main companies involved and the Lift team has started to receive requests from other organisations at the Airport. Regency Duty Free has a dozen carpoolers already signed up, including Laura Baker and Elmira Naghizadeh who obviously have fun sharing a Lift!

Auckland Airport

hero week.Paul Divers of Auckland International Airport Limited is a Lift travel hero. In his own words...

"I purchased my Vespa in early 2005, most likely due to the early onset of a mid-life crisis, and realising I couldn't afford a sports car! So whilst the perceived benefits were mostly around trying to look cool, I've found in the last 18 months there are a few other really useful upsides."

"For a start, scootering to and from work is heaps cheaper than driving. The other major benefit is knowing my journey time is more certain on the scooter than in the car. On a clear run, Titirangi to the airport can take about 25 to 30 minutes in the car. But the journey home at 5.30pm can be anywhere from 30 minutes on a really good day, to one hour 15 minutes on a bad day. On the scooter, I have managed to find routes that avoid the motorway. The journey time to Titirangi is almost always about 40 minutes. Overall, I've found scootering a great alternative to the car. OK, it's no fun on a wet day, but waterproof gear doesn't need to be expensive. And I've found you can park a scooter much closer to the terminal than anyone can park a car!"

Air New Zealand

bike rack.Dwan Turner of Air New Zealand cycles to work about three times a week, which is a return trip of 45km. Wow! Dwan rides a mountain bike to give him more manoeuvrability on the road, like jumping curbs!

He rides to work for several reasons which include keeping fit (he rides recreationally and enters the odd race), saving money on petrol, and it also removes a car from the road.

Dwan is keen to see a reduction in the number of cars on our roads and to remind motorists to give way to cyclists and also to give them plenty of room. Dwan says that because he is both a cyclist and a motorist, he believes that a lot of safety education is required on both sides.
