Energy and fuel efficiency
Auckland Airport has a well established energy conservation group (ECOG) in place. This group is responsible for the company's emissions reduction plan and provides focus and action on the reduction of fuel and energy use.
The ECOG is tasked with identifying ways of maximising energy efficiencies and minimising climate change impacts. Importantly it includes representatives from across the company and enables us to influence and guide our retail and property tenants in energy conservation programmes.
In addition, a specific energy crisis team was established in 2008 to monitor the power supply situation and ensure our participation in a national “Powersavers” energy savings campaign. The campaign ran between May and July 2008 and 3,600kWhr per day were saved at the airport through reducing ambient and architectural lighting in the terminal buildings.
A focus on our pool vehicles and company car fleet has seen a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from our vehicle fuel usage of 67 tonnes, or 12%, over the last two years.
Auckland Airport took additional steps to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions with the introduction of a VW Polo Blue Motion and Hyundai Getz low emission diesel pool vehicles.
